Must Try Hong Kong Food: Yee Shun Milk Company

Hong Kong is a food haven; of the many reasons and things people head to Hong Kong for, food has to be one of them. And when our travel blog heads to Hong Kong, there’s one thing our Singapore Food Blog never fails to visit, Yee Shun Milk Company.

Yee Shun Milk Company’s (義順牛奶公司) Milk Pudding are of Legendary Status and it’s almost a crime to not try them when you are in Hong Kong. Walk into any of their 4 outlets found across the most popular areas in Hong Kong, and you’ll see how packed their outlets are with both tourist and locals alike. Do not be surprised if you are asked to share a table with other paying customers.

For our non Chinese speaking friends, do feel free to ask them for their English menu.

There’s 3 main types of Steamed Pudding. Milk, Chocolate Milk or Egg, and they all come with the option of either Hot or Cold. The most popular however, has to be their Milk Pudding which we personally prefer to be served hot.

At first glance, the milk pudding doesnt seem like much and isnt exactly a very “instagram-able” dish. I remember the first time I had it and when it was served, i wondered what all the hype was about because the dish looked so normal. But the first mouthful changed all that.

As you bring the milk pudding near to you, you can smell the fragrance of the milk that has been steamed for hours before. From the moment the milk pudding touches your lips, you can feel how soft and smooth the milk pudding is. Even without chewing, the pudding slides easily down your throat and leaves you craving for more. It is soft yet flavourful, filling yet light. An awesome dessert that we had 4 out of the 5 days we were there.

The chocolate milk pudding was equally good. I would think that the chocolate in the pudding would make the overall pudding more condensed, but I was wrong. Despite it’s chocolate flavouring, the chocolate milk pudding was still smooth as silk. We however, prefer having their chocolate milk pudding cold rather than hot.

To be fair, we also tried their Egg pudding. While I wouldnt exactly use the word “disappointing” cause while the Egg pudding is fragrant, it isn’t exactly unique or different from regular steamed eggs. And the strong flavor of the egg does also gets a tad too overwhelming pretty quickly. We for one didn’t manage to finish the steamed egg pudding we ordered and we recommend going for their Milk or Chocolate Milk Pudding instead.

Yee Shun Milk Company Other Notable Mentions:

Other notable mentions at Yee Shun Milk Company are:

1) Pork Chop Bun

Another popular dish at Yee Shun is their Pork Chop bun which can easily be seen being order at every other table. The bun itself is cooked to make it crispy and the tender pork chop is fried just enough for it to be tender without losing it’s juciness

2) Luncheon Meat Macaroni

If you are heading to Yee Shun Milk Company for more than just desserts and need something more staple, go for their Macaroni soup. The soup base is light and flavourful. You would also be able to choose optional add ons such as hot dog, egg etc. We personally prefer having it served with their Luncheon Meat.
